As part of Lewiston’s
Sesquicentennial celebration, in recognition of Lewiston’s German heritage and
to commemorate the contribution to brewing beer in Lewis Clark Valley by the
Weisgerber family, the Hells Canyon Homebrewers Club is proud to present the
Weisgerber Commemorative Steam Beer Competition.
The Weisgerber family started Idaho’s first brewery in 1862 and built Lewiston’s first
brick building in 1877. The family continued brewing beer in Lewiston until Idaho's prohibition
law closed them down in 1915.
This contest is open to all homebrewers and is focused
on the California Common or Pre-prohibition steam beer style, which the Weisgerber
brewery was known to brew. Beer must be brewed at home. Commercially produced beer
will not be eligible. The contest will be judged at Beautiful Downtown Lewiston’s Alive After
Five event in Brackenberry Square on July 20th. To enter the contest, you must bring
two unmarked twelve ounce bottles and the detailed recipe for your beer to the
Weisgerber Commemorative Steam Beer Competition judging booth in Brackenberry
Square between 3:00 and 5:30 pm on July 20th. An entry fee of $10 will be collected
for each beer entered. Judging will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
There will be five judges for this
event, composed of a representative from M.J. Barleyhoppers, a representative
from Riverport Brewery and three sweepstakes winners of the Nez Perce County
Fair Homebrew competition. Judges will look for the beer that tastes the best and best
represents the California Common or Pre-prohibition steam beer style.
The winner receives $400 in cash and your recipe will be brewed at both M.J. Barleyhoppers
and Riverport Brewery and will be highlighted at this year’s Oktoberfest. Please
join us in celebrating Lewiston’s Sesquicentennial at this year’s Oktoberfest
held October 1st in Pioneer Park. For questions, email us from our
